FIRST BYZANTINE MUSIC SCHOOL FOR FEMALE CHANTERS
Founded by internationally acclaimed chanter and Byzantine Music professor Nektaria Karantzi, the School for Psaltries is the first school worldwide devoted specifically to Byzantine music and its repertoire for the female voice. It provides specialized training for female chanters (“Psaltries”), combining the study of Byzantine musical tradition with focused attention to the particular vocal qualities and requirements of the female voice.
The School operates under the auspices of the Women in Byzantine Music Worldwide Association and in collaboration with the Conservatory of Classical and Contemporary Music in Athens. With students from around the world and online tuition available internationally, its programme can be followed regardless of location.
Nektaria Karantzi also directs the School’s two Byzantine chant ensembles: Psaltries, the women’s Byzantine ensemble, and Nektar, the girls’ Byzantine ensemble.
